The Durham Regional Police Service is investigating a homicide in Ajax, Ontario, that left a man in his mid-20s dead early Tuesday morning. This incident marks the second homicide reported in the region so far in 2026.
Officers were called to a residence on Shorten Place, near Taunton Road and Harwood Avenue, at approximately 12:40 a.m. on April 14, 2026. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the victim, identified as Sanjula Perera, suffering from traumatic injuries. Despite attempts to provide life-saving assistance, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
While police initially received a report of a break-and-enter in progress, investigators have since classified the event as a targeted attack. Officials have stated that there is no broader threat to public safety, as they believe the victim was specifically selected.
Two suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot before police arrived. Officers conducted a search of the neighbourhood, including the use of police dogs, but were unable to locate the individuals. No descriptions of the suspects have been released at this time.
There is currently a significant police presence in the area as investigators conduct door-to-door canvassing for evidence and witnesses. Anyone who was in the vicinity between midnight and 2 a.m. on April 14 and possesses cell phone, dash cam, or surveillance footage is asked to contact Detective Scot Green at 1-888-579-1520.
