Residents in Stratford, Ontario should prepare for a sharp drop in temperature following a mild weekend, as a cold snap moves into the area starting Sunday, April 19, 2026. According to Environment Canada, the city will see temperatures fall from a high of 18°C on Saturday to just 5°C on Sunday, with overnight lows plunging to -3°C by Monday night.
This cooling trend follows a week of heavy rain that has left local ground conditions near-saturated. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has reported that water levels remain slightly elevated across the watershed. Because the ground is already soaked, officials warn that much of the incoming rain will flow directly into local water bodies.
The authority is actively operating its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to help manage downstream water levels. While they do not expect serious flooding at this time, the Avon River is being monitored closely as changing temperatures could affect water runoff.
Recent reports from the conservation authority have highlighted that ongoing shoreline erosion and pollutant levels in the Avon River remain a concern for the community. The city is currently looking for ways to improve the resilience of the river’s surroundings through the Flowing Futures: Avon River Design Challenge, which invites residents to submit ideas for future infrastructure.
