The Leduc Cats Minor Football organization is kicking off its 40th season this weekend in Leduc, Alberta, marking the start of a spring program for local youth athletes. The season begins with shared practices on Friday, April 17, 2026, followed by a full slate of games starting Saturday, April 18, 2026.
The club, which was founded in 1987 by Leduc Sports Hall of Famer Bob Thompson, currently supports approximately 200 young athletes with the help of 15 board members and 65 on-field volunteers. The organization operates within the Capital District Minor Football Association, a league that includes 21 member associations across the Edmonton area.
Games for the spring season are set to take place at various venues, including Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove. Opponents for the opening weekend include teams from the Spruce Grove and District Minor Football Association, as well as squads from the Fort Saskatchewan Minor Football Association, the Stony Plain Minor Football league, the St. Albert Minor Football Association, and others.
The Leduc Cats spring programs offer flag football for age groups ranging from U10 to U16, along with U16 female tackle football. The season is scheduled to run through early June, featuring twice-weekly practices and games held on Saturdays. Beyond the local league, the organization has a history of developing talent, with five former players moving on to the professional level and others continuing their careers at the collegiate level.
