Residents in Kingston, Ontario, can take part in the city’s first Giveaway Day of 2026 on Saturday, April 25. The event encourages community members to clear out unwanted household items by placing them at the curb for others to collect, supporting the city’s broader strategy to reduce the amount of waste sent to local landfills.
Participants do not need a permit to join the event. Residents are asked to place items outside by 9 a.m. with a sign marked as free. Acceptable items for the giveaway include furniture, books, small appliances, electronics, CDs, DVDs, kitchen gadgets, dishes, and construction materials.
According to the City of Kingston, certain items should not be left out due to safety concerns. These include baby walkers, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds, and toys, as identified by guidance from the Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health Canada.
Adam Mueller, the Operations Manager of Public Works and Solid Waste for the city, notes that this initiative is part of the #WasteNotYGK campaign. The program serves as a practical way for residents to help the city reach its goal of diverting 65 percent of household waste from landfills, while also helping neighbors save money and reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing new goods.
The city requires all residents to bring any unclaimed items back inside their homes by 6 p.m. Items left at the curb after this time will not be collected by the city, and residents may be subject to fines.
