The Waterloo Regional Police Service has arrested and charged a 22-year-old woman from Scarborough in connection with three distraction thefts that took place in Kitchener on November 4, 2025.
The accused is facing two counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of robbery. She was held for a bail hearing following her arrest on April 16, 2026.
Police describe these incidents as distraction thefts, a tactic where suspects approach victims, often while in a vehicle, to engage them in conversation. The suspects offer a gift of fake gold jewellery, and while placing the imitation items on the victim, they simultaneously remove the victim’s real jewellery without the person noticing. These crimes frequently target elderly community members by taking advantage of their kindness when they attempt to assist the suspects.
Since June 2025, regional police have investigated approximately 15 occurrences of similar distraction-based offences. This recent arrest is part of a broader effort by local authorities to address property crimes and robberies within the region.
While local crime rates have been a focus for investigators, police are continuing to remind residents to be aware of their surroundings and to remain cautious of unsolicited interactions with strangers. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has also issued guidance on these types of crimes, noting that such thefts often occur in just seconds, leaving victims unaware that their valuables have been stolen until after the suspect has left the area.
