The Kingston Frontenac Public Library is helping residents prepare for the upcoming municipal election by hosting a free information session for anyone interested in running for office. The event takes place on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Calvin Park Branch located at 88 Wright Crescent in Kingston, Ontario.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the roles of city council and school board trustees, as well as the steps required to become a candidate. The session will feature presentations from staff representing the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing, the Limestone District School Board, and the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario. Local city staff and a former city councillor will also be on hand to answer questions about the process.
To be eligible to run for municipal office in Ontario, candidates must be at least 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen, and either live in Kingston or own or rent property in the city. Individuals who are married to someone who meets these property requirements are also eligible, provided they are not legally prohibited from voting.
The nomination period for the October 26, 2026, election officially opens on May 1 and closes on August 21 at 2 p.m. The City of Kingston is also holding a separate hybrid information session today, April 27, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall. Additionally, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario is providing free online workshops tailored for first-time candidates, youth, and those representing underrepresented communities.
Kingston City Council is currently composed of the mayor and 12 district councillors. Residents interested in local leadership have until late August to finalize their nomination papers for the upcoming vote.
