Road crews in York Region are currently working to repair potholes on local streets, including those in Aurora, following a winter season that saw heavy snowfall and frequent freezing temperatures.
On April 16, 2026, the Regional Municipality of York announced that repair teams have been working around the clock to address damage caused by the difficult weather conditions. According to the region, crews are patrolling 24 hours a day to monitor road conditions and prioritize necessary fixes. To improve efficiency, these patrol trucks are using digital tools to detect and flag potholes in real time.
The recent winter was noted for its harsh conditions, including deep freezes and multiple snowfall warnings from Environment Canada. These weather patterns often lead to the formation of potholes as water seeps into road cracks, expands when it freezes, and causes the pavement to break apart.
To support ongoing infrastructure maintenance, the region has a projected budget of $567 million for roads and transit in 2026, which is part of a larger, record-breaking $5.2 billion municipal budget approved for the year.
Drivers are encouraged to report any potholes they encounter on regional roads. Reports can be submitted via the Report a Problem App, by calling 1-877-464-9675 extension 75200, or by emailing [email protected]. According to research from CAA South Central Ontario, vehicle damage caused by potholes can be costly, with repair bills for drivers often ranging between $500 and $2,000.
