The Regional Municipality of Durham is hosting a free public open house on Saturday, May 23, 2026, to celebrate National Public Works Week in Whitby. The event will take place at the Oshawa/Whitby Depot at 825 Conlin Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Residents of all ages are invited to learn about the essential services managed by the Durham Region Works Department. This department is responsible for critical infrastructure, including the region’s water supply, sewage treatment, road maintenance, traffic signals, and waste management.
The open house features several hands-on activities, including a heavy equipment simulator, a Touch-a-Truck display, and face painting. Guests can also take tours of the depot and visit various information booths. An ice cream truck will be on-site, and no pre-registration is required to attend.
This event marks National Public Works Week, which runs from May 17 to May 23, 2026. This year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, was established by the American Public Works Association to highlight the role of public works in daily life. Regional Chair and CEO John Henry officially proclaimed the week in Durham Region on behalf of the regional Works Committee.
