Residents in Cambridge who rely on public transportation may face significant service disruptions starting May 1, 2026, if a potential strike involving Grand River Transit employees goes ahead. The union representing roughly 850 workers, Unifor Local 4304, will be in a legal position to strike at 12:01 a.m. following ongoing contract negotiations with the Region of Waterloo.
The possibility of a work stoppage follows a vote where 93 per cent of union members supported strike action. Workers are seeking improvements to wages, scheduling, and benefits in their new contract. The previous collective agreement expired on April 30, and the last time these employees went on strike was in May 2023, resulting in an 11-day service interruption.
If the strike proceeds, conventional bus routes and MobilityPLUS paratransit services will not operate. KW AccessAbility has expressed significant concern regarding the impact this will have on vulnerable residents who rely on paratransit services for their daily needs. However, ION light rail trains will continue to run normally, as those are maintained by Keolis and are not part of this labour dispute. Additionally, Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region has confirmed that regular school bus operations will continue and schools will remain open.
Grand River Transit is advising monthly pass holders to cancel their auto-renewal for EasyGo fare cards to avoid charges during potential service disruptions. Residents who depend on transit are encouraged to plan for alternative transportation options should the strike take place.
