The City of Barrie is hosting a series of free and low-cost recreation programs for youth aged 11 to 17 during National Youth Week, which runs from May 1 to May 7, 2026. This week-long initiative aims to recognize the positive contributions young people make to the community.
Throughout the week, local youth can participate in a variety of activities, including public skating, stick and puck sessions, and open swims. The city is also offering free drop-in sessions at the youth centres located within the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre on Mapleton Avenue and the Lampman Lane Community Centre on Lampman Lane. Additionally, students can access gym time at the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre and the East Bayfield Community Centre.
Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall stated that the week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the positive contributions young people make to the community. The programming is designed to provide high-quality spaces that support youth as they grow and remain active.
National Youth Week concludes on May 7, which is recognized as National Child and Youth Mental Health Day. For families requiring additional support, the city continues to provide the recACCESS Program, which offers fee assistance for eligible residents to ensure recreation programs remain accessible.
