The Waterloo Central Railway is set to launch an immersive experience called Mystery Express: Rum Runners in Waterloo, Ontario, starting May 15, 2026. This two-hour adventure transforms the heritage train into a mobile speakeasy, inviting guests to participate in a fictional smuggling ring led by a character known as Uncle Leo.
Participants in the 19+ event will take part in themed activities, including playing gangster-style games and dodging mock police raids. Guests may even receive Prohibition-era aliases like Lucky Lefty, Knuckles Malone, or The Queen of Gin as they navigate the experience. The train runs on the historic Waterloo Spur, which connects Northfield Drive in Waterloo to the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market and Elmira.
The railway is operated by the Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society, a registered charity that has been preserving rail history since 1986. The organization maintains a fleet of heritage equipment, including the 1923 Steam Locomotive No. 9, which is one of the few remaining operational steam engines in Canada.
Tickets for the event are available in two categories. Lounge Car seats are priced at CA$105.93 and include a meal and a non-alcoholic beverage. Coach seats are available for CA$59.91 for adults and CA$53.49 for seniors aged 65 and older, with one complimentary non-alcoholic beverage included. Organizers note that tickets must be purchased by May 13, 2026, and no refunds will be provided unless the railway cancels the service.
