Regina is marking the start of Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3 to May 9, 2026, to help residents better understand local risks and improve their family safety plans. The national initiative, coordinated by Public Safety Canada, follows this year’s theme: Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.
Local efforts are led by the City of Regina and Regina Public Schools. With Saskatchewan facing specific threats such as extreme cold, severe thunderstorms, and power or gas outages, officials are highlighting the importance of personal readiness.
Tornado preparedness remains a significant focus for the community, which saw Canada’s deadliest tornado on June 30, 1912. To help residents stay informed, the city provides the notifynow alert system. This service sends notifications directly to residents regarding major road closures, evacuation orders, tornado touchdowns, fires, service disruptions, boil water advisories, and hazardous chemical spills. Residents are encouraged to register for these alerts by phone, text, or email at the city’s registration page.
To further encourage local participation, the city is running a contest to give away five 72-hour emergency survival kits. The contest, held in partnership with Regina Fire & Protective Services, remains open until May 9, 2026.
