The Ajax Public Library is helping residents get a head start on their gardens this spring with a hands-on workshop focused on seed starting and community exchange. The event, titled Easy Seed Starting for Beginners and Seed Exchange, will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the library’s Main Branch located at 55 Harwood Avenue South.
During the session, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., participants will learn how to create a seed snail, also known as a seed roll. This method provides a simple, space-saving way for gardeners to start their seeds at home. While the workshop requires registration to attend, those interested are encouraged to act quickly as only a few spots remain.
Following the guided session, a drop-in seed exchange will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Residents do not need to register for the exchange and are invited to bring seeds to trade, donate extra seeds, or browse and take home new varieties to grow. The event is presented in partnership with the Green Neighbours Circular Project, which focuses on sustainability and waste reduction, and the Green Bean Collective, a group dedicated to food security and community connection.
This program is supported by the Town of Ajax Seed Library. Located at the Main Branch, the seed library remains open from March to October and allows Durham Region residents to pick up a selection of seeds, with a limit of three packets per person.
