The Waterloo Region Community Foundation plans to launch a new pilot fund later in 2026 to support Indigenous-led and Indigenous-serving nonprofit organizations across Waterloo Region. This initiative, part of the foundation’s ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, aims to integrate these groups into the organization’s broader funding ecosystem.
The foundation, which holds $179 million in total assets and approved $7.6 million in grants in 2025, currently manages approximately $700,000 in annual community grants. In addition to these general funds, the organization maintains a Racial Equity Fund, which supports groups led by and serving Indigenous, Black, and people of colour. The upcoming pilot fund will offer additional support specifically tailored for Indigenous-led and Indigenous-serving organizations, allowing them to apply for funding alongside other available grant opportunities.
The local nonprofit landscape in Waterloo Region has seen significant growth in Indigenous-focused services in recent years. For example, Anishnabeg Outreach opened the region’s first Indigenous-focused child and family centre in 2019.
Further details regarding the specific application criteria and the total value of the new pilot fund will be released by the foundation once they are finalized. Interested organizations are encouraged to reach out to the granting team for more information as the program develops.
