A 43-year-old man from Rankin Inlet is facing nine charges after allegedly breaking into a home on Tuungaaq Street, threatening the people inside, and firing a gun. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the residence at approximately 8:40 p.m. on April 29, 2026.
No injuries were reported during the incident, and the suspect, identified as Jamesie Alariaq, was arrested without further conflict. Corporal James Johnston of the Rankin Inlet detachment thanked members of the community for their cooperation, noting that the assistance allowed officers to resolve the situation safely and peacefully.
Alariaq remains in custody and is expected to appear in court in Iqaluit on May 19, 2026. The charges against him include break and enter, using a firearm while committing an offence, carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of pointing a firearm, two counts of uttering threats to cause death, discharging a firearm, and two counts of unsafe storage of a firearm.
