Crews began installing new traffic management equipment in Spruce Grove the week of May 11, 2026, marking the start of a city-wide program designed to reduce congestion along major roads. The project aims to improve traffic flow by using artificial intelligence to synchronize signal timing at 12 intersections along the Jennifer Heil Way and Highway 16A corridors.
The City of Spruce Grove council approved $860,000 for the program through the 2026 Spring Budget Adjustment. This initiative follows a 2025 pilot project that successfully evaluated the accuracy of the technology, known as NoTraffic, at the intersections of Grove Drive and Hawthorne Gate.
According to the city, the system uses sensors with computer vision and radar to detect and classify road users, allowing the lights to adjust in real time. Officials expect the technology to reduce corridor delays by at least 15 per cent and decrease wait times for pedestrians through adaptive detection.
Installation work is expected to continue for two to three weeks. Residents should anticipate brief lane closures at each of the 12 intersections as the equipment is put into place.
