Work is officially underway on a new residential project in downtown Whitby that will bring more than 40 affordable homes to the area. On May 12, 2026, Habitat for Humanity GTA and the Town of Whitby gathered to break ground on a site located at the intersection of Hickory Street South and Dunlop Street East.
The development will feature stacked townhomes with one-, two-, and three-bedroom units designed to help families, couples, and individuals secure affordable homeownership. Through the organization’s program, these homeowners will make mortgage payments geared to their income levels, providing a path to housing stability that may otherwise be out of reach due to rising costs and high down payments.
The project is the result of a multi-level partnership. The town donated the land for the site and committed an additional $25,000 to the project through the Mayor’s Community Development Fund. The federal government also provided support through the Housing Accelerator Fund, which helped enable the land donation.
To help bring the construction to completion, Habitat for Humanity GTA is working toward a $7 million fundraising goal. A newly formed group, the Whitby Housing Action Committee, is assisting in these efforts by raising awareness, recruiting volunteers, and gathering donations. This initiative aligns with the town’s goal to increase its affordable housing supply and develop more inclusive neighbourhoods. While applications to purchase the new homes will open at a later date, the project marks a significant step forward in the local effort to expand housing options for residents.
