The Arctic Gateway Group is looking to fill a key leadership role at the Port of Churchill in Manitoba ahead of the upcoming shipping season. The organization is currently accepting applications for a manager to oversee labour, stevedoring, and equipment until May 22, 2026.
This full-time, seasonal position is responsible for coordinating the loading and unloading of cargo from rail trains and managing the docking of ocean-going vessels. The manager will also oversee the safe handling of export grain and mineral products, while ensuring the maintenance of port vehicles and heavy equipment, such as front-end loaders, boom trucks, forklifts, and skid steers. Applicants for the role must possess a minimum of 10 years of related experience, a valid Class 3 driver’s license with air endorsement, and heavy equipment operator certification.
The Arctic Gateway Group, which is owned by a partnership of 41 First Nations and northern Manitoba communities through OneNorth, is prioritizing qualified Indigenous and northern Manitoba applicants for the position. The port serves as Canada’s only deepwater Arctic port connected to the North American rail network and offers the shortest route from the prairie provinces to European markets.
Operational activity at the port is increasing, with storage capacity for critical minerals tripling over the last year. The federal government has committed $180 million over five years to strengthen the local railway and diversify operations through the Port of Churchill Plus initiative. While the port currently operates for approximately four months each year due to ice coverage in Hudson Bay, studies are underway to explore the possibility of year-round shipping through icebreaker deployment in partnership with Fednav and the University of Manitoba.
