The Port of Churchill is looking to fill four positions as the shipping season picks up in Churchill, Manitoba. The Arctic Gateway Group, which owns and operates the port, is hiring a Security Guard, Executive Assistant, Manager of Labour, Stevedoring and Equipment, and Journey Person Electrician — most of them full-time seasonal roles.
The jobs support port operations and cargo loading for ocean-going vessels. The shipping season runs from late July to early November because Hudson Bay freezes over for much of the year. This year, grain shipments resumed in July for the first time since 2020, and the port is handling what Arctic Gateway Group calls the most diversified shipping season in its history, with exports including grain, critical minerals, potash, and industrial goods bound for Nunavut.
For the roughly 900 people living in Churchill, these are rare full-time job opportunities. Local residents say about half the town is currently unemployed. The port and railway are owned by a partnership of 41 Indigenous and Bayside communities, including 29 First Nations and 12 remote northern Manitoba communities.
The federal government has committed $175 million over five years for Hudson Bay Railway and port expansion as part of the Port of Churchill Plus project. Manitoba is planning to pitch the project to international investors at a summit in September 2026.
