Churchill residents have until September 30, 2026 to share their views on training and workforce opportunities in Northern Manitoba. The Town of Churchill is encouraging people who live, work or are connected to the region to fill out a survey that will help shape a new Labour Force Development Strategy for the north.
The survey is being run by Chadwick Consulting Ltd. for the Government of Manitoba. It asks about residents’ experiences, ideas and priorities for working and living in Northern Manitoba. The goal is to guide future federal and provincial investments in local employment and skills training.
“Chadwick Consulting Ltd. is working with the Government of Manitoba to develop a labour force development strategy for Northern Manitoba, and we want to hear from people who live, work and are connected to the region,” the company states.
The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. Answers are confidential and will only be shared in summary form. Participants can enter a draw to win one of five $100 Visa gift cards. The draw will take place in October and winners will be notified by email.
The consultation comes at a key time for the region. Major economic projects, including the Port of Churchill Plus initiative, are expected to create new job opportunities. That project includes upgrading the Hudson Bay Railway, adding ice-breaking capacity, building an all-weather road and developing a new energy corridor. The Northern Manitoba Sector Council estimates the north will need 2,000 to 2,500 skilled young workers for industrial sectors.
Churchill faces unique workforce challenges. According to the Churchill and Area Economic Profile, 41.4 percent of residents have no certificate, diploma or degree, which is higher than the Manitoba average. The profile also shows 65 percent of jobs in the area are in government-funded sectors such as education, health care and public administration.
