Collingwood is experiencing its first significant heat event of the 2026 season today, Tuesday, May 19, with Environment Canada issuing a heat warning for the Barrie-Collingwood-Hillsdale area.
Temperatures reached 29.3°C by late afternoon, which is significantly warmer than the average May high of 20°C for the community. The federal weather agency notes that humidex values have climbed to 35, and while it is hot today, conditions are expected to change rapidly as a major cooldown arrives tonight. Temperatures are forecast to drop to a high of only 11°C on Wednesday, May 20, with overnight lows near 2°C and a risk of frost.
In addition to the heat, there is an active severe thunderstorm watch for the area. Residents should remain alert for the possibility of damaging wind gusts between 90 and 110 km/h, large hail, and potential tornado activity throughout this evening. Ontario’s extreme heat guidance advises that people should check on older adults, those living alone, and other vulnerable individuals multiple times throughout the day during these extreme temperature shifts.
Safety officials remind the public that Environment and Climate Change Canada advises taking precautions when the sun is intense, as unprotected skin can burn quickly under high ultraviolet conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates as the weather transitions into significantly cooler conditions mid-week.
