Residents of Aurora are facing the first significant hot and humid spell of the season, with Environment Canada issuing a yellow-level heat warning for the area. The warm weather began on Monday, May 18, and is expected to continue through Tuesday, May 19.
Daytime temperatures are reaching near 30 degrees Celsius, which is approximately 11 degrees above the typical seasonal high of 19 degrees. Humidex values are also expected to climb near 36. Meteorologist Kristina Kretchman noted that the sudden shift from recent cooler weather may feel dramatic, as a warm air mass from the United States moves into Ontario bringing extra heat and moisture.
The weather agency is reminding all residents to take precautions to stay safe during this period. Specifically, officials are warning people to never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle and to check their vehicles before locking them to ensure no one has been left behind.
This heat event is expected to come to an end Tuesday night. Cooler, more seasonal temperatures are expected to return on Wednesday, May 20, with a forecast high of 14 degrees.
