The Tłı̨chǫ Government is hosting a New Beginnings Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Behchokǫ̀ on May 21, 2026, to provide a new support resource for residents navigating addiction recovery. Organized in partnership with the Justice and Victim Services Division, the session offers a private space for community members to build connections and share their experiences.
Addiction recovery remains a top priority for leadership and residents in the Northwest Territories community. Over the past several years, community members have frequently called for improved access to local services. This advocacy has included requests for on-the-land healing programs and treatment facilities closer to home, rather than requiring residents to travel south for care.
Local leaders have been working to address these concerns for some time. In 2020, Behchokǫ̀ Chief Clifford Daniels noted that the government was exploring the feasibility of a local treatment centre, stating that the community consistently identifies the need for such services within the North. Residents have highlighted the urgency of this work, with community member Jocelyn Zoe previously speaking out about the toll substance use takes on families.
The event follows broader efforts to increase resources in the region. In February 2025, the Government of Canada announced new funding for Behchokǫ̀ under the Substance Use and Addictions Program to help support local wellness initiatives. The new meeting serves as an additional, tangible step in the community’s ongoing efforts to provide accessible support for those in recovery.
