The Town of Aurora is hosting a series of free community events from May 24 to May 30, 2026, to promote inclusion and celebrate the community’s accessibility efforts. These local activities are being held in advance of National AccessAbility Week, which the Government of Canada officially recognizes across the country from May 31 to June 6, 2026.
The week of programming in Aurora concludes with a main celebration on Saturday, May 30, at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., residents can visit a Community Zone and a Sensory Zone. The event also features sport demonstrations, including rhythmic gymnastics and bocce ball sessions with Special Olympics Ontario, seated fitness, and wheelchair basketball and sledge floor hockey with Para Sport ON. Earlier in the week, on May 28, the Alzheimer Society will lead a session focused on brain health at Aurora Town Square.
These initiatives are supported by the Accessibility Advisory Committee, which has guided local efforts since 2002. The town has implemented several physical upgrades to improve access to public spaces, such as installing pool hoists, automatic door openers, adult change tables, and audible pedestrian signals at intersections. Additionally, a Sensory Pathway has been added to the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex.
To further assist residents in navigating local spaces, the town has verified many of its main municipal buildings on the AccessNow mobile app. This digital tool provides specific accessibility information to help individuals with disabilities plan their visits to locations such as the Aurora Seniors’ Centre, the Petch House, and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex.
