Three Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations are moving ahead with plans to build Port Alberni’s first new hotel since 1980, with construction possible as early as July 2026 and an opening targeted for the summer 2027 tourism season in Port Alberni, BC.
The four-storey, 76-room Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham is planned for 3355 Johnston Rd. near Walmart. The hotel is expected to include a pool and waterslide, adding more rooms for visitors heading to the west coast.
The project is being developed by Tseshaht First Nation, Hupacasath First Nation and Huu-ay-aht First Nation with Calgary-based MasterBUILT Hotels Ltd. The ownership split is 61% for Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses, 33% for Tseshaht First Nation and 5% for MasterBUILT Hotels Ltd.
Tseshaht First Nation also received $16.45 million through an Incremental Economic Reconciliation Agreement with the BC government, money that supports economic development projects including the hotel. According to the partners, construction permits have already been paid, clearing the way for work to begin.
City officials have said Port Alberni serves as a gateway community for travellers going to Tofino and Ucluelet, and the new hotel is meant to help fill a long-standing need for more rooms in town.
