The Grimsby Public Library is inviting families to kick off the summer with two free events in early June, starting with a children’s author visit on Friday, June 5, followed by a carnival-style reading party on Saturday, June 6.
On Friday, local authors Robin Whaling and Rhonneke Van Riezen will read from their newly published picture book, “A Fluvial What’s-It Now?: Adventures of a Fluvial Geomorphologist,” from 11 a.m. to noon. The story follows a girl named Daisy and her Aunt Marina as they explore a local creek, introducing readers ages 9 to 12 to the science of how rivers shape the land. The book was released on April 15 by Tellwell Talent and runs 30 pages.
The next day, the Grimsby Public Library hosts its Ultimate Summer Reading Kick-Off Party from 2 to 4 p.m. The afternoon will feature a bouncy castle, face painting, cotton candy, and balloon artistry by Halaloo, the Smithville-based entertainment service run by Hal Grant, who has been performing across the Hamilton, Niagara Falls, and Burlington areas for more than 25 years. The party is sponsored by BCM Insurance Company, a Welland-based mutual insurer that invests over $200,000 annually in community support through its grants program.
Families can also sign up for the TD Summer Reading Club at the event. Registration is open from June 3 to August 26 for children aged 12 and under. Both events are free and take place at the library’s location at 18 Carnegie Lane in Grimsby.
