A 25-year-old man was seriously injured when his e-bike and a car collided in southwest Kitchener on June 4, 2026, police say. Waterloo Regional Police responded to the intersection of Fairway Road North and Wilson Avenue at around 3 p.m. after reports of a crash involving an e-bike and a car. The e-bike rider was taken to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries. The 21-year-old woman driving the car was not hurt.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service continues to investigate and asks anyone with dash camera footage or who saw the crash to call the Traffic Services Unit at 519-570-9777, extension 8856. Anonymous tips can also be left with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
This is the latest serious crash involving an e-bike in Kitchener this year. On April 4, a 44-year-old man died after his e-bike and a pickup truck collided at the intersection of Lancaster and Guelph streets. The Fairway Road and Wilson Avenue area near Fairview Park Mall has a history of collisions with cyclists and pedestrians, including a cyclist hurt in October 2025 and a pedestrian hit in December 2023.
Across Waterloo Region, people walking or cycling account for 34 per cent of injury collisions, even though they make up only three per cent of all crashes. Kitchener’s Vision Zero plan aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries, noting that over 1,200 crashes happen on city streets each year, causing more than 200 injuries. Speed plays a big role in how severe crashes are: at 50 km/h, a pedestrian has about a 15 per cent chance of survival if hit, but that jumps to 90 per cent at 30 km/h.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is currently updating e-bike rules to create separate e-bike classes with specific safety standards. The public consultation for those changes closed on June 7, just days after this most recent crash.
