Spruce Grove Composite High School’s Panthers made a powerful showing as the Metro Edmonton High School Athletics spring championship season got underway, adding two rugby titles on June 8, 2026, to their earlier Boys Rugby 7’s championship. The Panthers, who compete in the Metro Athletics league as part of the Parkland School Division, have now collected three Metro Edmonton High School Athletic Association championships for the 2025-2026 school year.
The senior boys rugby division 4 team rolled past Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack 36-10 and Eastglen 26-0 to claim their banner. Earlier in the day, the senior girls rugby division 4 squad edged Memorial 34-27 in a tight final.
According to the Metro Edmonton High School Athletics website, the spring championship season continues through early June with finals in soccer, flag football, and other sports still to be decided. The Panthers currently sit among the league’s top performers, already holding three titles for the year: senior girls rugby division 4, senior boys rugby division 4, and boys rugby 7’s.
The spring season follows last month’s Metro Track and Field Zone Championships, where about 1,000 athletes from 56 Edmonton-area schools gathered at Foote Field on May 21, 2026. Those results helped set the stage for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association track and field provincials, which took place June 5-6 in Calgary.
Metro Athletics, led by manager Michelle Ross and facilitator Shawn Shepherd, runs 20 sports for high school students across the region. The Spruce Grove Panthers compete at both junior and senior levels, with players meeting the league’s academic requirement of at least 800 minutes of study per week to stay eligible.
