Environment Canada is forecasting highs of 33°C early in the week, about 10 degrees above the seasonal normal of 23°C, before a shift to clouds and showers drops readings to 18°C on Friday.
The heat is expected to peak Monday and Tuesday under a mix of sun and cloud. Tuesday may see a 30 percent chance of late-afternoon showers with a humidex of 34. The UV index will reach 7, which is considered high, so residents are being reminded to wear sunscreen, cover up, and limit time in the sun during midday hours. Overnight lows will offer some relief, dipping to around 11°C.
While Port Alberni is used to summer warmth, the BC Centre for Disease Control notes that sustained indoor temperatures above 31°C can be dangerous, especially for older adults, people living alone, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. Officials recommend checking on vulnerable neighbours and staying hydrated.
A sharp change arrives Thursday, June 25, with cloudy skies and a high of just 20°C. Rain moves in Thursday night and continues through Friday, when the high will be only 18°C. Friday night brings a 60 percent chance of showers. That marks a roughly 15-degree swing from the early-week heat.
