Olds can expect a warm-up this week after a rainy and cool Monday, says Environment Canada. Rain and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast through the day, with a high of 14 C, before conditions improve starting Tuesday.
As of late morning, the temperature sat at just 9 C with 94 per cent humidity and northwest winds at 27 km/h. The forecast also shows a risk of frost overnight into Tuesday, with temperatures falling to 2 C.
“Periods of rain with risk of a thunderstorm,” the Monday forecast reads. “Wind northwest 20 km/h gusting to 40. High 14.”
The rest of the week looks much brighter. Tuesday will be sunny with a high of 20 C, Wednesday sunny and 22 C, and Thursday a mix of sun and cloud with the temperature reaching 25 C.
The warm and dry stretch is good news for residents planning outdoor activities or catching up on yard work after the soaking start to the week. But the clear skies won’t last forever. Weekend forecasts call for a return to unsettled weather, with showers and highs of just 14 C to 16 C.
June is typically the wettest month in the Alberta Foothills. Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Alysa Pederson has noted that so-called “June monsoon” systems can sometimes drop more than 150 millimetres of rain in the region.
