A stretch of sunny skies and mild temperatures is in store for Rankin Inlet, Nunavut this week, giving residents a welcome taste of summer. Environment Canada says no weather alerts are in effect for the area, and daytime highs from June 22 to 26 will range from 13°C to 19°C. Overnight lows are expected to dip to between 6°C and 10°C under mostly clear skies.
The forecast is a pleasant surprise for the community of about 3,000 people, where the average June high is just 8.4°C and the average overnight low hovers near 0.8°C. On Monday afternoon, conditions at Rankin Inlet Airport were already partly cloudy with a temperature of 15.6°C and a southeast wind at 16 km/h. The rest of the week will bring mainly sunny to sunny days, with Wednesday expected to be the warmest at 19°C.
With the sun staying up from 3:04 a.m. until 11:16 p.m., people will have plenty of daylight to take advantage of the nice weather. The UV index is forecast at 6 on Monday and Tuesday, which is considered high, so health officials suggest using sunscreen and wearing a hat and sunglasses if you are spending time outside. Popular summer activities around Rankin Inlet include hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking and the co-ed softball league, which plays on what is known as Nunavut’s only real turf field.
Environment Canada says the pleasant conditions should last through Friday, with no active alerts for the region. After a long Arctic winter, a week of sunshine and above-normal warmth is good news for anyone hoping to get outdoors in the Kivalliq.
