The District School Board of Niagara has approved a $677.74 million balanced budget for the 2026-2027 school year, a $10.9 million jump from last year, with new spending aimed at technology, skilled trades, and construction of three elementary schools.
Trustees passed the spending plan at their regular meeting on June 22, funding 43,519 students across the region, including those at Grimsby’s Lakeview Public School and Park Public School.
The budget sets aside more than $124 million for school repairs, major system upgrades, and three new elementary schools scheduled to open in September 2027 in Welland and Thorold, Niagara’s fastest-growing communities. The combined investment for the new schools tops $95 million and will create over 2,000 pupil spaces plus licensed childcare at each site.
On top of bricks and mortar, the board is putting over $2 million into information technology infrastructure and expanding Specialist High Skills Major hospitality programs in secondary schools. Officials say those additions aim to strengthen day-to-day learning and career pathways for students.
While student numbers remain stable, the board continues to manage rising costs in busing, sick leave, and supports for students with complex needs. The budget meets all Ministry of Education funding rules, according to the DSBN.
DSBN’s fiscal year runs from September 1 to August 31, with the new budget taking effect for the coming school year.
