Port Alberni residents now have a chance to speak up about which community groups may get a break on their 2027 property taxes. The City of Port Alberni posted a public notice on June 23, 2026, opening a public input period for permissive tax exemption applications. These exemptions let council excuse certain organizations from paying municipal property taxes, but the lost revenue shifts the tax burden onto all other property owners in the community.
Under Section 224 of the BC Community Charter, city council can choose to exempt land or buildings from property taxes for the next year, but only if a bylaw is passed by October 31, 2026. The deadline for organizations to apply is 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2026. Council is not required to approve an application just because an organization received an exemption in the past.
To be eligible, a group must offer programs that directly benefit the community, such as youth recreation, senior services, mental wellness and addiction support, arts and culture, heritage protection, emergency services, or environmental preservation. During the last four-year cycle, from 2024 to 2027, proposed exemptions totaled $302,324 and included 17 places of worship, along with other local non-profits.
Residents who want to support or oppose a specific application can contact city hall or attend an upcoming council meeting. Inquiries can be directed to Peter Bitter, Accountant/Assistant Collector, at 250-720-2848 or [email protected]. City hall is located at 4850 Argyle Street.
More details on the permissive tax exemption process are available on the City of Port Alberni website. The public notice posting place can be viewed at portalberni.ca.
