Kingston residents will soon see Utilities Kingston crews in their neighbourhoods as the utility kicks off a major multi-year meter replacement program this July. The project will upgrade all electricity, water, and gas meters across the city with new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI 2.0) technology, bringing enhanced safety features directly to local homes.
The new meters pack in several safety upgrades. Electric meters will be able to detect arc flashes and other issues early, plus allow for remote shutoffs in emergencies. Gas meters will automatically shut off if conditions become unsafe, like during high temperatures. Water meters will help spot leaks early, potentially saving homeowners from costly damage. “Where possible, electric, water, and gas meters will be replaced during the same visit to minimize disruption,” the utility says in its program announcement.
Work will roll out neighbourhood by neighbourhood, with advance notices sent to homes before crews arrive. Most installations take up to 30 minutes per service and involve a brief service interruption. Residents will need to be home, as technicians require indoor access to complete the work. All staff and contractors carry photo identification and drive clearly marked vehicles; anyone unsure about a visit can call 613-546-1181 to confirm.
There is no cost for the meter upgrades themselves. However, if crews find a deficiency in the meter base or connected equipment—such as a damaged electric meter base, which is owned by the property owner—the customer will be responsible for hiring a licensed contractor to make repairs. The utility says deficiencies might include unsafe conditions or gear that doesn’t meet current safety standards.
The program marks another step in modernizing Kingston’s utility infrastructure. Utilities Kingston, which still operates a multi-utility model unique in Ontario, has provided electricity, water, wastewater, natural gas, and fibre services under one roof since 2000.
