A Grimsby student is getting a major boost for university this fall. Matteo Volpini, a 2026 graduate of Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Grimsby, Ontario, has been awarded a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study agriculture with a focus on horticulture at the University of Guelph starting this September.
The Niagara Catholic District School Board announced the scholarship on June 29. Volpini was one of only 100 students chosen across Canada from more than 1,300 nominees. Within Niagara, just two students received the honour this year.
Volpini will enter the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program at Guelph, with a focus on horticulture, global food sustainability, and supporting Canadian farmers. The scholarship recognizes high-achieving students heading into science, technology, engineering, or math.
The University of Guelph is a new partner in the Schulich Leader Scholarships program, making Volpini one of its first ever recipients. Blessed Trinity staff member Elvira Beltrame-Presta nominated him for the award.
The Schulich scholarships were created in 2012 with a $200 million fund from businessman Seymour Schulich. Since then, over 1,070 have been handed out to students across the country.
