Cochrane marked Canada Day on July 1, 2026 with a full day of family fun at Commando Lake Beach and Pavilion, wrapping up the town’s first-ever Blue Heart Cultural Awareness Week.
The celebration featured traditional favourites like the Round the Lake Swim, beach games, bouncy castles, live music from local performers, and fireworks at dusk. Free watercraft rentals, which were offered in previous years, were expected to be available to residents.
The event, held at the lake often called the community’s “Blue Heart,” tied into the conclusion of the newly proclaimed Blue Heart Cultural Awareness Week, which ran from June 21 to July 1. The town partnered with Taykwa Tagamou Nation, the Ininew Friendship Centre, ACFO Temiskaming-Cochrane, and Le Rayon Franco de Cochrane to create programming that highlights the town’s tricultural identity—Indigenous, Francophone, and Anglophone traditions.
The Shared Shores framework, introduced this year, sets aside Indigenous Cochrane Day on June 21, Franco-Cochrane Day on June 24, and Anglo-Cochrane Day on June 25 as voluntary civic holidays, making Canada Day a natural finale for the week.
The Round the Lake Swim, a local tradition dating back to at least 1987, drew swimmers of all ages, while families enjoyed games on the beach and kids bounced on inflatables set up at the Commando Pavilion. The venue, located at 226 Fifth Street, also hosted live music acts throughout the afternoon and evening.
Cochrane’s Community Services Department organized the festivities, which have been an annual staple at Commando Lake for decades. Last year’s events included performances by local musicians Estelle and John, with Coldwater from Timmins headlining the stage.
