The Tłı̨chǫ Government is taking applications now for two free skills training programs in Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories, that can help residents gain practical certifications and equipment for work or personal use. Both courses have an application deadline of July 10, 2026.
A four-day chainsaw operator course runs from July 7 to 10 at the Kǫ̀ Gocho Sportsplex. It is being delivered by Arctic Response Canada, with funding from the Arctic Energy Alliance, and will provide Level 3 certification to 15 participants, who each also receive a free STIHL chainsaw and safety gear upon completion. The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission is putting $205,000 into chainsaw safety courses in three NWT communities, including Behchokǫ̀, as part of its injury prevention funding.
On July 17, a free ATV safety course will be held at Russell Lake. Organized by the Tłı̨chǫ Government’s Justice and Victim Services and Healing and Community Wellness departments, the course is open to residents aged 16 and over and includes certification along with a helmet.
Community leaders see both programs as ways to build skills that can open doors to local employment. The chainsaw training, in particular, responds to the high cost of heating in northern communities where firewood can offer a cheaper, renewable alternative to oil. Safely learning to harvest wood could also lead to small business opportunities or land-based work.
With only 15 spots in the chainsaw course and the application window closing July 10, officials encourage anyone interested to apply soon. The Tłı̨chǫ Career Development Division, based at the sportsplex, offers ongoing support with career planning and training programs for Tłı̨chǫ citizens in all four communities.
