The Margaret Hennigar Public Library in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, is rolling out a free summer series called Adulting 101, giving teens a chance to learn everything from basic automotive maintenance to online safety. The eight-week program kicks off Tuesday, July 7, and runs every Tuesday through August 25 at the library inside the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre at 135 North Park Street.
Each week tackles a different topic, starting with car care on July 7. Later sessions include resume writing and interview prep with NS Works School Liaison Lorenda Barkhouse on July 21, and a safer sex and consent workshop run by South Shore Sexual Health on July 28. The full lineup also covers menstruation, budgeting, online safety, no-cook meals, and homemade products.
“Learn all the important skills you’ll need to successfully adult in the real world,” the library’s event listing says, laying out the schedule for all eight sessions.
South Shore Sexual Health describes itself as a pro-choice, sex-positive, and 2SLGBTQ+ inclusive organization that provides free, non-judgmental education and services. NS Works, run by the Employment Solutions Society, offers no-cost employment help such as career planning and job search support across Lunenburg and Queens counties. These partners anchor sessions that directly address gaps young people often face outside the classroom.
Adulting 101 programs have been popping up in libraries and schools across Canada in recent years, aiming to fill a real gap for younger generations who report feeling less prepared for everyday independent living. The Bridgewater series is part of that trend, offering a casual, no-cost setting for teens to pick up practical know-how over the summer months.
