Cochrane, Ontario is in for a stretch of hot and sunny weather this week, with Environment Canada forecasting temperatures well above normal and a very high UV index that calls for extra sun protection. Daytime highs are expected to reach 29°C on Monday and Tuesday, with a further climb to 30°C by Saturday.
The Environment Canada forecast shows the UV index at 8, or very high, for Monday and Tuesday. Residents are urged to limit their time in direct sunlight, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and to wear protective sunglasses, seek shade, and reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily.
Humidex values will also make it feel muggier than the thermometer shows. Monday’s humidex is forecast at 31, rising to 33 on Tuesday. Environment Canada says readings between 30 and 39 mean “some discomfort,” and people should consider limiting or adjusting outdoor exercise, particularly older adults, children, and anyone with existing health concerns.
A slight break in the heat comes Tuesday afternoon, when a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of a thunderstorm could bring some relief. Cloudy skies are expected Wednesday, with sunny conditions returning Thursday and sticking around through Friday, with highs between 23°C and 27°C before temperatures climb back to 30°C for Saturday.
This week’s forecast is roughly four to five degrees above the normal early July high of 25°C for Cochrane. The town will also see about 16 hours of daylight each day, with sunrise at 5:27 a.m. and sunset at 9:30 p.m., making sun protection important well beyond the midday hours.
