Heavy rainfall that started in late June has forced the closure of several roads across Leduc County, Alberta, with the flooding expected to keep routes impassable into early July. The Leduc County government has posted multiple road closure notices, urging residents to check conditions before heading out.
One full closure is in place on Range Road 230 between Township Road 502 and Highway 21 due to an open excavation. Range Road 235 is also closed from Highway 623 north to Township Road 495 because water is covering the road. Other closures include Range Road 245 between Highway 623 and Township Road 500, Range Road 270 south of Township Road 504, and the Telfordville bridge on Range Road 21 between Township Road 495A and Highway 622.
The flooding is part of an extreme weather event that shattered a century-old rainfall record. Environment Canada reports that Edmonton recorded 244 millimetres of rain in June 2026, breaking the previous June record of 216.5 mm set in 1914. Heavy rainfall between June 20 and 22 contributed significantly to the record-breaking total, overwhelming stormwater systems across the region.
With wastewater systems pushed to capacity, several nearby municipalities including Beaumont and St. Albert joined Leduc County in asking residents to stop all non-essential water use. That means avoiding showers, laundry, dishwashing, and unnecessary toilet flushing until systems recover.
