Stouffville, Ontario, is under a heat warning from Environment Canada as a stretch of hot and sunny weather settles over the region this week. The warning took effect Monday, July 13, with the hottest conditions expected Tuesday, when temperatures could reach 36°C and humidex values might climb to 43.
Residents will feel the heat right away on Monday. By 3:00 p.m., the Uxbridge weather station recorded 30°C with a humidex of 34, and sunny skies will keep things toasty through the evening.
Tuesday is forecast to be the peak day. Along with the high of 36°C, gusty west winds up to 40 km/h are possible, and the UV index will hit 9, or very high. That’s about 10 degrees above the usual mid-July high of 26°C for the area.
The heat is expected to stick around through Wednesday or Thursday, according to Environment Canada, with daytime highs staying between 30 and 37°C and overnight lows of 20 to 24°C. Humidex values could reach 45. On top of the heat, the hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category across the Greater Toronto Area.
Some relief arrives Friday, when a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers begins, cooling things to around 28°C. Saturday looks similar, with cloudy skies, a 30 per cent chance of showers, and a high near 27°C. The Canadian Climate Institute notes that Canada is warming twice as fast as the global average, and many cities are projected to see two to four times as many 30°C-plus days by mid-century.
