Environment Canada forecasts a steady warming trend, starting at 24°C on Monday and peaking at 29°C on Saturday. There are no weather alerts currently in effect for the area.
Tuesday will bring the most intense sunshine, with the UV index reaching 8 — a level labeled “very high.” Health officials urge anyone spending time outdoors to limit sun exposure, especially during midday hours, and to use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Monday’s UV index is expected to reach 7, which is considered high.
The dry pattern holds through midweek, but a shift arrives Wednesday. Environment Canada is calling for a cloudy day with a 40 percent chance of showers, the highest rain probability of the week. The chance of showers dips to 30 percent by Friday night. Daytime highs on Thursday and Friday will still reach 28°C, with Saturday hitting 29°C.
The quiet weather is a sharp turn from late June, when high water levels on the Battle River — following heavy rain — triggered a high streamflow advisory from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. That advisory, issued June 22, warned of elevated flows along the river and its tributaries. Minor flooding affected low-lying sections of the Battle River Valley Trail System and Dog Park, with the Town of Ponoka urging residents to stay on designated paths and away from riverbanks.
Even with those recent high flows, a broader water shortage advisory remains in place across the Battle River Watershed. The advisory, now in its third year, reflects a pattern of dramatic swings: the same river that briefly flooded parkland in June has stopped flowing entirely during late summer in each of the past two years. The province is also moving to update flood hazard mapping for Ponoka, with a new study covering 19 kilometres of the Battle River that recently concluded its public engagement phase on July 8. That study, led by Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, is set to replace and expand on maps originally drawn in 1994.
For now, the focus is on the sunshine. With July typically the warmest month in Ponoka — normally seeing daily highs around 23°C — this week’s temperatures will run above average, giving residents a classic prairie summer stretch. The forecast suggests soaking up the heat early, as those late-week showers could arrive by Friday night.
