Waterloo Region is about to welcome thousands of young athletes for the largest Ontario Summer Games ever held. The four-day event runs from July 30 to August 2, 2026, across 28 venues throughout the region. It marks the first time the community has hosted the provincial amateur sports showcase in 24 years.
The opening ceremony kicks things off Thursday, July 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at University Stadium on the Wilfrid Laurier University campus. Live entertainment will be provided by DJ Z-Spinz. Athletes and fans from across Ontario are invited to pack the stadium for the celebration.
Around 4,200 athletes, coaches and officials will compete in 23 sports during the Games. Competitions range from archery and lacrosse to volleyball and martial arts, all spread across nearly 30 local facilities. Athletes will stay in dedicated villages set up at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, along with select hotels.
The Games are expected to inject more than $6 million into the local economy through visitor spending at restaurants, shops and attractions. Organizers with Waterloo Region 2026 Ontario Summer Games say the event will also boost tourism and put the region’s sports infrastructure in the spotlight.
More than 1,000 volunteers have stepped up to fill roles in food services, logistics, medical support, security and transportation. The volunteer effort is one of the largest community mobilizations the area has seen in years. Desjardins Group is the presenting partner for the Games, backing youth empowerment and sport accessibility.
The Ontario Summer Games started in 1970 and serve as the province’s biggest multi-sport event for athletes aged 12 to 18. Waterloo Region has a deep history with the event, having hosted in 1977, 1990 and most recently in 2002. The 2026 edition, however, is the biggest in the program’s history.
