The City of Wetaskiwin is asking residents to help prevent localized flooding by clearing debris from catch basins near their homes. Following recent heavy rainfall, city officials say keeping storm drains clear is an easy way for people to protect their neighbourhoods.
According to a public advisory, the city has 968 catch basins across Wetaskiwin, and even a few leaves or twigs can cause water to back up onto streets. Residents are encouraged to check nearby drains and remove anything like leaves, grass clippings, litter, or branches that might block water from flowing in.
The call comes after a very wet June, when Environment Canada recorded about 218 mm of rain in the area, making it one of the wettest months on record. While some nearby areas saw flooding and road washouts, Wetaskiwin’s neighbourhoods mostly stayed dry thanks to recent work on storm sewers, new rain gardens, and a new wastewater treatment plant.
City officials remind everyone that keeping catch basins clear is something anyone can do to help the whole community. During or after a rainfall, taking a few minutes to check the drain closest to your home can make a big difference, especially in low-lying spots where water tends to pool.
