Today’s forecast calls for mainly sunny skies and a high of 27°C, with a humidex making it feel like 31. The UV index is 7, or high, so residents should protect themselves from the sun. However, the evening brings a 30 percent chance of showers with a risk of a thunderstorm.
The rest of the week looks mainly dry and sunny. Wednesday will see a high of 22°C, climbing to 25°C on Thursday, and reaching 28°C on both Friday and Saturday. These temperatures are well above the average July temperature of 17.3°C for Ponoka. Sunday turns cooler and cloudier with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of just 18°C.
July is typically the hottest and wettest month in Ponoka, averaging nearly 14 days of precipitation, so the thunderstorm risk is not unusual. Residents should note that no flood alerts are in effect, though a comprehensive Ponoka Flood Study assessing the Battle River is currently underway. Public engagement on the draft maps wrapped up on July 8, 2026, as part of an effort to update flood maps that date back to 1994.
The study examines 19 kilometres of the Battle River and five kilometres of an unnamed tributary to better understand flood hazards. Ponoka has a history of flooding, including a major event in 1990 when the Battle River overflowed into the east side of 50th Street, flooding the Riverside area and causing extensive damage.
