The Town of Churchill is hosting a free community barbecue on August 4, 2026 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Town Centre Complex at 180 La Verendrye Avenue. Mayor Michael Spence and Town Council members are inviting all residents to the lunch event, which runs from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in front of the building.
The complex was officially dedicated on April 24, 1976 and has since become the community’s central hub. It houses essential services including the Churchill Health Centre, the Duke of Marlborough School from Pre-K to Grade 12, a library, a swimming pool, an indoor playground, a curling rink, a bowling alley, a theatre, a hockey arena, a gymnasium, a fitness centre, and several meeting spaces.
“Join Mayor and Council for a FREE Community BBQ as we celebrate the 50th Anniver…” was the message shared by the Town of Churchill on social media, emphasizing the event’s role in bringing neighbours together to mark the milestone.
The celebration occurs as the community of about 870 residents continues to anchor a region known as the polar bear capital of the world. The town centre stands as a lasting result of investment by federal and provincial governments in northern Manitoba during the 1970s, designed by the Winnipeg firm of Gaboury Lussier Sigurdson Architects.
Everyone in Churchill is encouraged to attend the barbecue on August 4 to recognize a facility that has supported daily life in the remote subarctic town for half a century.
