Port Alberni is buzzing with activity as production crews for ‘Home Town Takeover Canada’ film throughout the city until August 28, 2026. Residents can expect road closures, construction, and film crews in various locations, including the Harbour Quay area, which is getting a major makeover.
The HGTV series, hosted by Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, is renovating key civic spaces, eight local homes, and a handful of businesses. The show covers all renovation costs for homes and businesses, while the City of Port Alberni pays for civic space improvements. City officials say the partnership brings a ‘significant value-add’ through the show’s team of design and renovation experts.
The Harbour Quay Marine Building is one of the standout civic projects, with plans for an extended covered patio, more outdoor seating, and upgraded lighting. However, the work has been a mixed bag for nearby businesses. Some shops report losing about 50 per cent of their usual sales because construction has blocked access, while others are seeing a boost from extra visitors curious about the filming.
Port Alberni beat out more than 200 other communities, including Comox, to become the first town featured in Season 1 of ‘Home Town Takeover Canada.’ The show is produced by RTR Media in association with HGTV and is set to premiere later this year.
The City has also issued a Request for Proposals on July 21, 2026, to find a consultant for community engagement on the Somass Lands project. That 43-acre waterfront site, once a sawmill, was bought by the city in 2021 for $5.3 million and is being developed with partner Matthews West Developments Ltd. Public input sessions are expected in late Fall 2026.
With filming wrapping up at the end of August, the city is reminding everyone to plan ahead and be patient as production crews work to give Port Alberni a starring role on the national stage.
