According to The Weather Network, daytime highs will climb to 32°C on Friday and 30°C on Saturday, well above the usual late-summer temperatures.
The stretch of above-seasonal warmth follows a summer forecast from The Weather Network that predicted stronger heat for southern Alberta. While smoke has been hanging over the city, the skies are expected to clear in time for a sunny end to the work week. Friday in particular will feel hot, with plenty of sun pushing temperatures several degrees higher than normal for this time of year.
A change begins Sunday, August 9, which will be mainly sunny with a high of 27°C, but a 60 percent chance of showers moves in for the evening. The chance of showers continues into early next week with highs dipping to the low-to-mid 20s. This cooling trend lines up with the typical transition toward fall, though the region has been drier than usual this summer.
Environment Canada, which operates the weather station at Lethbridge Airport, recorded a temperature of 19.7°C at 10:00 a.m. on August 5 under mostly cloudy skies. Smoky conditions were expected to develop later in the day, keeping daytime heating a bit lower than earlier forecasts, but conditions are expected to improve as the weekend approaches.
Residents with outdoor plans through Saturday can expect great conditions, though anyone heading out should keep an eye on the forecast for Sunday and into next week as the weather turns more unsettled.
