Environment Canada says the temperature reached 28.9°C by late afternoon, with a humidex of 32 at 4:00 p.m. and expected to climb to 34 by 5:00 p.m. The UV index was measured at 2 during the late afternoon hours, but is forecast to rise to 7 on Thursday when cloud cover increases.
Residents are being reminded to take extra care outdoors. While no weather alerts are currently in place, the high UV levels typical of southern Ontario summers mean sun protection is essential. According to Environment Canada, UV index readings of 8 or higher are very high to extreme, and people should limit sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., wear UV-protective sunglasses, seek shade, and reapply sunscreen every two hours.
The fine conditions won’t last. Thursday brings a 60 per cent chance of showers late in the morning and into the afternoon, with a risk of a thunderstorm. The high will hit 26°C, with a humidex of 33 and a UV index of 7, or high. Friday and Saturday stay unsettled, with a 40 per cent chance of showers Friday and cloudy skies with a 60 per cent chance of showers on Saturday. Sunday promises a return to sunny skies and a high of 26°C.
These temperatures are close to the August normals of 25°C for a high and 13°C for a low. Environment Canada advises anyone with outdoor plans to take advantage of Wednesday’s clear weather, while being prepared for changing conditions as the week progresses.
