A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured after being struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in a crosswalk in Whitby on the evening of August 5, 2026.
Durham Regional Police say officers responded to the collision at Garden Street and Manning Road at approximately 8:55 p.m. The teen was riding southbound within the crosswalk when a southbound pickup truck making a right turn struck him.
The boy was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The 40-year-old female driver remained at the scene.
The Durham Regional Police Service is asking anyone with dash cam, cell phone, or surveillance footage of the area to contact D/Cst. Hoevenaars at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5255.
Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, cyclists are not permitted to ride across a roadway within a crosswalk. Riders must dismount and walk their bikes through crosswalks at intersections.
The collision comes as Whitby and Durham Region prepare for the back-to-school season. The region uses automated speed enforcement cameras, crossing guards, and community safety zones with doubled fines, while municipalities such as Clarington also use flexible road-mounted signs to protect pedestrians and cyclists.
